Whilst there are multiple metrics that you could pay particular attention to, there are some which should take priority, and can have the most impact if you take the actions in relation to your SEO that the data suggests.

Referrals from Search Engines

Whilst Google dominates search engine traffic, there are other players such as Bing and Duck Duck Go. Monitoring the level of traffic from each of them, and the balance of this traffic in relation to its market share can pay dividends.

Should you see any significant deviation, especially in the traffic from Google, there could be an issue in relation to a spam filter or penalty which has been applied by Google. You should also be aware that some SEO operations carry different weight with each search engine and therefore some tactics will work on some and less so on others.

Visits by Keyword or Keyword Phrase

Regardless of what path you follow in relation SEO, keywords will always play a part in some way or another. Knowing which of the keywords and phrases are bringing you the most amount of traffic is vital. It allows you to focus more efforts on those keywords which are proving to be effective and can also bring to your attention those which you may have previously not been aware of and should be targeted.

Monitoring traffic from searched for keywords can also alert you to any trends which may be occurring within your industry. This could be in relation to a new product, a new service, or important news. If through your tracking, you can see these keywords increasing in importance you can subsequently produce content that can take advantage of that, faster than your competitors are.

Conversions by Keyword or Keyword Phrase

Once someone has visited your website having entered a keyword into a search engine search box, then you will want to track if that visitor took any action on your website. Depending on the business type and how its website is set up, the conversion measurement can be a whole multitude of actions, from submitting their email address for information, to making a purchase.

By tracking these actions, and assessing which keywords are bringing visitors who take the actions, you can then adjust your SEO and content activities towards the keywords which have the highest level of conversions, and either curtail or improve for those keywords which do not convert.

Analysis of Page Visits

Unless you have a website that has just a couple of pages, you will want to assess how many pages on your website are receiving traffic sent from the search engines. This will be particularly important for making decisions regarding the SEO of very large websites which may have dozens or even hundreds of pages.

It will allow you to check that all pages are indexed, and fix those that aren’t. This may also lead to you making changes in your website’s architecture, improved sitemaps, or changes to the scope and types of content used on each page.
